Danny Murphy and Alan Shearer criticisedLiverpoolmanager Jurgen Klopp for his public dressing down ofChristian Bentekeon the pitch at St Mary’s on Sunday.Benteke came off the bench during the second half of Liverpool’s collapse againstSouthampton on Sunday as they threw away a 2-0 lead at half-time to lose 3-2 to Ronald Koeman’s side. The Belgian bore the brunt of a lot of criticism in the aftermath of the match after he missed another clear chance when racing through on goal late on. Had he scored that opportunity instead of sending it wide Liverpool may well have closed out the game and won the three points, but his miss spurred the Saints on further. He was pulled aside by Klopp at the end ofthe game and it appeared the German had some strong words for the Belgian striker who walked off midway through the conversation, and both Shearer and Murphy felt he could have done that behind closed doors.“I understand that he’s not his player, I don’t think he fancies him. He didn’t sign him,” said Shearer on Match of the Day 2. “I understand all of that but I wouldn’t take too kindly if I was a player and he came on to the pitch in front of 32,000 and let his feelings be known.“No problem if he wants to give him a telling off, or whatever it is, but do it in the dressing room, in the four walls in front of the rest of the players, not in front of all the fans.”“I couldn’t agree more, If you’re going to give someone a telling off then do it inside,” Murphy added. “Sometimes he’s great Jurgen Klopp, he’s been a breath of fresh air but sometimes he’s overly animated on the touchline and it doesn’t always go down well with everyone.”Liverpool’s chances of finishing in the Champions League spots were hit by their defeat on Sunday as they now trail fourth place by seven points. Although they have a game in hand, clawing back that gap to overtake both Manchester clubs and West Ham seems a huge task with only nine games left to play.
